One of the benefits of internal migration in Nepal is that migrants contribute positively to Nepal’s economy by bringing new skills and ideas to their destinations. This migration can however put pressure on existing social services and infrastructure, compromising the welfare of Nepalis in overpopulated areas.
The constitution of Nepal guarantees all citizens the fundamental right to move, live, settle, and work anywhere in the country. Policies need to be put in place to address the vulnerability of migrants. These policies need to align with the country’s ‘Leave No One Behind’ agenda, which urges that children and the older population are not left behind as a result of migration. It is also important for Nepal to undertake systemic infrastructure improvements and development in all ecological zones in order to ease, or even reverse, migration to heavily populated cities such as Kathmandu, and to reduce gender and class disparity in migration trends.
