Funding for English Medium Teacher Salaries Renewed for One More Year at Mountain School
Since the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, New Futures Nepal have had the pleasure of working with the Everest Mera Foundation (EMF) to support the communities in the Mahakulung region south of Everest. With harsh winter conditions and a population highly dependant on income from the Everest trekking industry, the region was hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, through the tireless work of the EMF, we managed to support this mountainous community through this difficult period. The impact of the pandemic however, is still felt by the communities of the region.
As part of this partnership, your fundraising has supported Chheskam Secondary School, which serves the educational needs of the secondary level aged children of the region. Currently educating 826 students, it is the oldest education institute in Mahakulung and has a catchment of children from 6 basic schools in neighbouring villages. It is the only school within the Solukhumbu district to offer English-delivered classes from Play Group to grade 6, and plans to extend this for up to grade 12 children in the future.
Due to its remote location and the communities sole reliance upon the Everest tourism industry, many families with children attending this school have struggled to cover school fees, and as a result teachers salaries have been at risk. Adverse conditions also affect the children’s ability to study in winter. All this combined meant that the education of the children was suffering.
With your help we were able to fund 914 cold weather tracksuits, giving financial relief of purchasing school uniforms to families during the pandemic and allowing the children to study comfortably in the colder winter months.
Since 2022, we have also been able to fund the salaries of 2 of the 4 English-delivered teachers (one teaching English and the other Mathematics) at the school.
We are pleased to announce that we will be funding these teachers again for the 2023-2024 accademic year.
In 2023, New Futures Nepal were delighted to receive recognition awards from the mayor of Chheskam and trustees Helen and Paul Crook were lucky enough to attend and speak at a ceremony at Chheskham Secondary School honouring our contribution to aid projects in the Mahakulung region.
